Veg-Friendly Restaurants and Grocers
This section contains a list of restaurants that I have eaten at while traveling the country on the lecture tour. Obviously, there are other restaurants with vegan food but I have not had the pleasure of eating at every veg restaurant in America. They ship meals (entrees, sides, soups, appetizers, breakfasts and more) to your home. And all for an incredibly reasonable price!
Shopping for vegan and vegetarian items is easy nowadays. Groceries like Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Ralph's, Kroger, Albertson's, Acme, Publix, Giant, Harris Teeter and Bigg's carry a variety of cruelty-free items. Great selections can also be found at local health food stores and Asian markets.
When dining out, don't forget about all the ethnic foods like Indian, Middle Eastern, Ethiopian, Mexican and Italian. They have tons of veggie options. There's Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese foods, too. Ask them to cook it WITHOUT fish/oyster sauce and just substitute tofu for the meat. One of the fastest-growing international vegan restaurant chains is LOVING HUT, with stores in Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. Loving Hut has opened several stateside restaurants in California, Arizona, and Florida, with more on the way; we've listed their domestic locations below. JOHNNY ROCKETS has an awesome vegan burger, too. Just make sure to order it without cheese, mayo or butter on the bun. Go to www.JohnnyRockets.com and find a restaurant near you. MOE'S SOUTHWEST GRILL has a great selection of vegan Mexican food. There's no lard in the beans and they have tofu! Go to www.Moes.com and find a restaurant near you. Most restaurant chains—like Burger King, Denny's, Fuddrucker's, Ruby Tuesday's, National Coney Island and Subway—have veggie burgers as well. However, all of the aforesaid burgers contain eggs or dairy so they are NOT vegan.
And PF Chang's Chinese restaurants have about 10 vegan selections on the menu. In fact, their tofu is the best tofu I've ever eaten anywhere. And you MUST order the tofu lettuce wraps as an appetizer to get the evening started. Go to www.PFChangs.com to find a restaurant near you.
Plus, cheeseless pizzas are awesome! Just make sure the dough and sauce are made without dairy products like whey or casein. Papa John's has vegan dough and sauce. Go to www.PapaJohns.com to find a restaurant near you.
If you need fast food, you can veganize the bean burrito and Mexican pizza at TACO BELL. Just order them without meat and cheese. You can order the veggie sub at SUBWAY on Italian bread without cheese and make that vegan as well. A little trick I do on the road is stop at a grocery store and buy a package of LIGHTLIFE SOY turkey slices, and then add it to the veggie sub when I get back to the hotel.
